“…I felt like my Bible was calling me. I felt this promise that if I read it, if I just read it like a book, cover to cover, it wouldn’t change me into an idiot, it wouldn’t change me into a clone of Pat Buchanan, and that was honestly the thing I was worried about with the Bible. If I read it, it would make me simple in my thinking. So I started in Matthew, which is one of the Gospels about Jesus. And I read it through Matthew and Mark, then Luke and John … and Jesus was very confusing, and I didn’t know if I liked Him very much, and I was certainly tired of Him by the second day. By the time I got to the end of Luke, to the part where they were going to … stretch Him out on a cross, something shifted within me … I remember sitting at my desk, and I don’t know what it was that I read or what Jesus was doing in the book, but I felt a love for him rush through me, through my back and into my chest. … I remember thinking that I would follow him anywhere … I loved Him, and I was going to follow Him. I think the most important thing that happens within Christian spirituality is when a person falls in love with Jesus.” .....Excerpt from Blue Like Jazz, by Donald Miller

Yes, I realize it seems odd to use my sports car heading on a section about spiritual matters.  If I can figure out how to change the website template, I will.  Until then, think of it as a metaphor for integrating faith matters into every area of life. But then beginning this section with the Miller quote where he worries if reading the Bible might make him "simple" in his thinking may seem a little different to you too. Please read on. It'll either get better ... or it won't.

I've been a follower of Jesus from an early age, taught classes in Sunday school, led small group Bible studies, and served on more church boards and committees than I care to remember.  It occurred to me recently that some of what I've written in the past for specific purposes might actually be useful to a wider audience.  With that thought in mind, for starters,  I dug out two papers.  One is on the relationship between work and worship.  The second explores what the Bible says about giving and tithing.  Since then I've added other material that I hope will be of benefit.

I make no pretense to having all -- or even most -- of the answers about these or any other Bible topics.   I'm not a seminary graduate, just a life-long learner who reads the Bible, commentaries, and other biblical literature. What I offer are the insights from 50+ years of following Jesus as best I can.

A noted publication directed to Christian leaders, thinking I was a minister because years ago I worked in paid ministry, once invited me to write for their magazine.  When I accepted, I mentioned that they ought to delete the "Reverend" when they addressed me.   They replied by withdrawing their offer.  They said to write articles for those in church leadership I needed to be in paid ministry.  That would have disqualified Jesus, so at least  I was in good company.

I mention this only because it's a view held by some, but is in stark contrast to my belief that God speaks to each of us first and foremost through the Bible and the teaching of His Holy Spirit.  I know Jesus had plenty to say; I think I have a few words to offer as a long-time follower of his.   If you  read on, I hope you find your time well spent.
